Andal’s Tiruppāvai begins with three Thaniyans, each a window into her devotion.
நீளாதுங்க ஸ்தநகிரிதடீ ஸுப்தமுத்போத்ய க்ரு’ஷ்ணம்
பாரார்த்யம் ஸ்வம் ஶ்ருதஶதஶிரஸ்ஸித்தமத்யாபயந்தீ
ஸ்வோச்சஷ்டாயாம் ஸ்ரஜிநிகளிதம் யா பலாத்க்ரு’த்ய புங்க்தே
கோதா தஸ்யை நம இதமிதம் பூய ஏவாஸ்து பூய:
அன்னவயல் புதுவை ஆண்டாள் அரங்கற்குப்
பன்னு தருப்பாவைப் பல்பதயம்⋆
இன்னிசையால் பாடிக் கடுத்தாள் நற் பாமாலை⋆
பூமாலை சூடிக் கொடுத்தாலைச் சொல்லு
சூடிக் கொடுத்த சுடர்க்கொடியே ! தொல் பாவை⋆
பாடி அருளவல்ல பல்வைளயாய் ! ⋆
நாடிநீ வேங்கடவற்கென்னை விதி என்ற இம்மாற்றம்⋆
நாம் கடவா வண்ணேம நல்கு

pararthyam svam srutisarasiras siddhamadhyapayanti
svochishtayam srajinigalitam ya balarkrutya bhunkte
goda tasyai nama idamitam bhuya evastu bhiyaha
annavayal pudhuvai andal arangarku
pannu thiruppavai palpadiyam
innisaiyal paadi kodutthal nar pamalai
poomalai soodi koduthalai chollu
soodi kodutha sudarkodiye ! thol paavai
paadi arulavalla palvalaiyay !
naadini venkatavarkennai vidhi enra immatram
naam kadavaa vanname nalgu
They reveal the maiden who offered two garlands to the Divine: the pū mālai of flowers she wore before offering, and the pā mālai of thirty sweet verses woven with love.
The Lord accepted both with joy, for they held the fragrance of her love. Thus begins the Tiruppāvai, thirty verses woven like a garland for Lord Ranganātha.
