What happens when you take the idea of a dosa batter, add apples and dates for sweetness, and turn it into pancakes?

Adiyen wanted to include millets in the diets of kids while still making it fun for them to eat. Since both children love pancakes, but Adiyen was not too comfortable letting them consume maida, there was the thought of trying out millet instead. The idea was to make something like the batter used for dosa, except for sweetness, by adding apples and dates. This way, the dish could bring in both iron and fibre.

With kids having long days and lots to study, it felt important to give them food that had complex carbohydrates and could provide long-lasting energy. So Adiyen tried out a recipe: Jowar Pancakes. The pancakes turned out with a taste that was out of this world (even better than maida pancakes), and the yield was enough for a family of four. Adiyen tried this recipe not only for the kids’ tiffin box but also as a small snack for the adults. It became a healthy, sugarless way to introduce millets into the diet.

The Recipe

The Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Jowar (soaked 24 hours)
  • 4 dates
  • 1/2 green apple
  • Dash of salt
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon cornflour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Dark choco bits (optional, for kids!)

The Method
  1. Soak Jowar millets for 24 hours
  2. Blend with dates, apple, cinnamon and salt to form a smooth batter, almost about a consistency of dosa batter
  3. Stir in cornflour, baking powder and choco bits
  4. Cook pancakes in a greased pan till golden

Verdict: Soft, fluffy, naturally sweet pancakes. Kid-approved, no maida, no refined sugar. Perfect for tiffin or a healthy family snack! The kids give it a 10/10!
