About Thiruvenkatamudaiyan

Thiruvenkatamudaiyan is another name of Lord Venkateswara, the presiding deity of the famous Tirumala temple in Tirupati. He is also famously known as Tirupati Balaji, Lord Venkata, Tirumalaiyan, Venkatachalapati, Srinivasa Perumal, and Ezhumalaiyan (Lord of the 7 hills). His consorts are Padmavati and Bhudevi, the avatars of goddess Lakshmi, who is the consort of Lord Vishnu.

The story of the establishment of the Tirupati temple is nothing short of perseverance and deep compassion. During the Dwapara Yuga, Adisesha became the Seshachalam Hills after losing a contest with Vayu. The hills were also the abode of Adivaraha, which is Lord Vishnu’s boar form, after he killed Hiranyaksha, making Tirumala sacred as Adivaraha Kshetra.

In Kali Yuga, Narada advised some sages, who were performing a yagna, to decide who could be given the fruits of the yagna among the Trimurti, which included Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Bhrigu was sent as a representative to each of the Trimurti’s abodes. As he went unnoticed by Brahma and Shiva, he cursed Brahma not to be worshipped and Shiva to be worshipped as a lingam. He then visited Lord Vishnu, who was deep in his meditation. As he went unnoticed once again, he kicked Lord Vishnu on his chest. Lord Vishnu then asked for the forgiveness of Bhrigu and served the sage by massaging his legs. During this time, he accidentally squashed Bhrigu’s extra eye that was on the sole of his foot, destroying the sage’s egotism. Nonetheless, Mahalakshmi felt disrespected in the process, as Lord Vishnu’s chest was her abode, and she left Vaikunta to live on Earth.

Lord Vishnu, as Srinivasa, came to Tirumala searching for Mahalakshmi. To aid him, Brahma and Shiva became a cow and calf to provide milk to Srinivasa. When a cowherd struck the cow, Srinivasa was hurt and cursed the Chola King, who was the cow’s owner, to be reborn as Akasharaja.

In his next life, Akasharaja’s daughter Padmavati, an incarnation of Lakshmi, was born in Padmapushkarini, Tiruchanur. Srinivasa married Padmavati at Narayanavanam and returned to Tirumala, where both he and Lakshmi manifested as stone deities, vowing to remain there forever for the salvation of humanity in Kali Yuga. As Perumal and Thayar chose to remain permanently on Tirumala, it is believed that Tirupati itself became Vaikuntam on Earth, also known as Bhuloka Vaikuntam, the divine abode of Vishnu manifest in the mortal realm.

In the 11th and 12th centuries, Swami Ramanuja visited Tirupati three times. During the first visit, he stayed with his uncle Tirumalai Nambi and learned the esoteric meanings of Ramanaya. His second visit was to resolve a dispute between Shivites and Vaishnavites about the true nature of the Lord enshrined in Tirumala. In his final visit, at the age of 102, Ramanuja installed the deity of Govindaraja Swamy and laid the foundation for the present-day town of Tirupati.

Swami Ramanuja organised the temple’s rituals according to the Vaikhanasa Agama tradition and introduced the chanting of Naalayira Divya Prabandham, enriching the spiritual life of the temple. He also established the Tirupati Jeeyar Mutt in 1119 CE, ensuring that temple worship and service would continue in an unbroken lineage. To this day, the Jeeyars uphold the rituals and practices ordained by him, preserving the sanctity and discipline of the temple.

According to tradition, Swami Vedanta Desika, one of the greatest acharyas of the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya, is believed to be the avataram of the temple bell of Tirumala, symbolising the eternal sound of divine truth that calls devotees to the Lord. His life and works stand as an enduring echo of the same devotion and discipline that Sri Ramanuja established.

For the people of Tirupati and devotees worldwide, the temple is not just a place of worship; it is the earthly abode of the divine. The immense faith and devotion of millions have made Tirumala Sri Venkateswara Temple the richest temple in the world, not merely in material wealth, but in spiritual abundance and the collective devotion it inspires. Every offering made to Lord Venkateswara is seen as a symbol of surrender, gratitude, and the boundless grace that continues to flow from the sacred hills of Tirumala.
